I wasn't quite ready for this information but it all fits in.. No records found in Maine however. I paid to have a records search done in Maine and Quebec
Extract 1, the search for Robert Stoken. The following record comes from the registers of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Quebec City, register for the year 1811 on the back of folio 11, Quebec National Archives microfilm #M-138.14.
George Stoken of St. Giles Farmer, and Anne his wife had a son born on the twenty ult, & baptized this thirteenth day of June, One Thousand Eight Hundred & eleven, named, Robert,
by(signed) Alex'r Sparks Min'r
(signed)
George Stokan Father
Ann Stokan Mother
(This child was born May 23, 1811.)
Extract 2, the search for Flora McLean. The following record comes from the registers of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Quebec City, register for the year 1816 on the back of folio 11, Quebec National Archives microfilm #M-138.14.
Stokan & McLeanGeorge Stokan of Quebec aged about Thirty six years, Widower, & Flora McLean of said place spinster, aged about twenty two years, were joined in marriage, by License from His Excellency Sir Gordon Drummond at Quebec, this twenty first day of March One • Thousand Eight Hundred & Sixteen, by The Mark of Ann Willman x
So .... Flora Ann McLean was NOT the mother of Robert Stoken. It appears that Ann Stoken (Robert's mother) died before 1816. Note.. Lots of folks died at that time in Quebec as England (Canada) was at war with the United States. (War of 1812) Quebec City was surrounded for nearly a year and a large number of the population died before the Americans were defeated.) BobT
The researcher notes.......Everyone in my databases with the name Stokan, Stoken, Stocken, Stockens, Stocking, or Stockings all either children or grandchildren of George, with the exception of Helen, who might be a sister. I also found four instances of your family in records I have indexed but not published on the internet yet. Your family knew how to spell their name, but those old time ministers were creative.
More to come
Bob
